Second Summer Planting Time

It's July time to plant something new

For the longest time, I have tried to figure out why most gardeners stop growing vegetables in mid-summer. My only theory is that tomatoes are a very popular plant to grow so many home gardens are centered around them. The average tomato takes about 3 months to grow from seed to harvest. When you direct sow after the threat of frost your tomato harvest will be around early to mid-July.

So what happens between July and September or for that matter the rest of the year?  According to the website MyBluprint, there are 5 vegetables you can grow in 60 days or less.

  • Green Onions (Scallions) Harvest In 20-30 days. ...
  • Radishes. Harvest In: 20-30 days. ...
  • Spinach. Harvest In: 45-50 days. ...
  • Lettuce. Harvest In: 45-55 days. ...
  • Summer Squash. Harvest In: 50-60 days.

It is mid-July. About a week ago I planted cucumbers, and bush beans, I expect to harvest both before the first frost. The cucumbers take about two months.

My latest harvest of bush beans

Bush beans are underrated. I planted them all around my garden this spring and again this summer. I just had my third harvest and there is still plenty for my pot later on. In a little under two months, I had my first harvest. I will plant a few more seeds in a few days for a mid-September harvest.

Okay, I am not a radish guy but my daughter is. I love growing them because they are super easy and super fast to grow. I harvested these in 5 weeks. I planted the seeds in an old dishpan. By the way, only half of what I grew is in this photo.

My last recommendation is summer squash. I planted and harvest about a dozen so far this summer. The plants that I grew this spring have petered out but a week ago I planted more seeds that will produce new squash before the end of September.

So what are you waiting for? Your garden is calling again. Summer is here so make the most of it and your garden.
