Save money gardening by planning ahead
Think ahead -save money
The moment I realized I would have basically an unlimited space to garden I was elated then panic creeped in. How do I fertilize a homestead garden that could end up being a quarter of an acre with eggshells, coffee grind and banana peals? I needed to get creative. Even though I now have unlimited wood chips from my new neighbor and an endless supply of ashes I would still need more, much more to amend my 3 gardens over the spring and summer months.
I decided to hunt for sales during the winter when most people are focused on the Christmas holiday. Gardening is the futurist thing from their minds which is why prices are lower. After a few weeks I decided to target more specific items based on what I knew I wanted to grow this summer so once the land was purchased I had the soil tested.
The results from the test were very helpful. Rather than buying general nutrients I was able to buy exactly what I needed. With so many sales the amendments were adding up pretty fast so I brought a bin to store them in. I refer to this as my treasure chest.
Well, fast forward to present day. We are in early May and just like the winter snow the sales have also gone away. You may find yourself asking if the winter sales are over than what's the point of this post? That is a fair question. The point is that there are sales all the time, mostly around holidays. Labor Day, Earth Day, 4th of July sales and don't forget clearances and closeouts. The bargains are out there you just have to look for them.
