Overcoming Obstacles in my Summer Garden

Without a doubt, this has been the most challenging summer I have ever had in the garden. I think these headlines say it all.

June 2019 was the hottest on record for the globe
July was Earth’s hottest month on record, beating or tying July 2016

The weather is not the only problem I am dealing with this summer. I am now having to deal with an invasion, no not from aliens I'm talking about the four-legged kind.

It's early August and my garden has definitely taken a hit this summer. For those of you who follow me on social media, it should come as no surprise that between the critters and the heat it's been a tough summer. I nearly doubled the size of my gardening space which means more care and attention needed to be given to my plants. I went away for a weekend and lost most of my corn. The heat took out several other vegetables. My newly purchased apple tree ($12.99) came close to being added to the casualty list but I managed to save it.

I must admit I was not prepared for ninety-degree weather all summer long. Call it global warming or by any other name but the undeniable fact is that the summers have definitely gotten hotter.

I was taken aback last week when someone suggested that I give up gardening. Am I disappointed with the losses in my garden this summer, sure? Am I pissed off at how the deer and other creatures have turned my garden into a midnight smorgasbord?   Your damn right. Does that mean that I am going to give up absolutely NOT?

We have had hot summers before and we have had problems with critters before just not on this level. So what's a gardener to do? In a word adapt.  I have been researching various methods of watering my garden without having to physically use containers every day. I have already implemented a few short term methods to combat the deer. Deer and other animals do not like the smell of Irish Spring. If you put a bar inside a pair of pantyhose or socks it should keep them at bay.

I will address more long term solutions in a future post.

I do not want to leave anyone with the impression that this summer garden was a bust. Because I planted so much more this year I am still on track to harvest as much as I did last year. I am a few weeks away from planting my fall garden and yes again this year I will grow throughout the winter with the return of my Endless Summer Series sequel.

The bottom line is that the world of the home gardener is changing, probably forever. Technology is not only our friend in the home or office it can be very useful in the garden also. Stay tuned
