Re-Introduction of the Frugal Gardener

Not your run of the mill gardener

With all of the gardeners on social media, I decided to explain my unique approach to planting and growing food. I have been gardening in one form or another since the early '80s My gardening methods are unusual in a few ways.

1. I don't have one garden, I have three including my Raised Crate Island Garden. Each garden is one of a kind. My original raised garden is multifunctional. In late fall each year I convert it into a mini-greenhouse.

2. Evenghouth I live in a climate that has four seasons I garden year-round even during winter when the nights can drop down into the single digits.

3. At last count my pot garden had over 40 containers some even have fruit trees.

4. I love to garden but hate spending money to grow my own food so my style is to make my own soil amendments whenever possible.

I am currently growing cherry tomatoes in this makeshift container made from salvaged materials and cinderblocks given to me by a friend.

This trellis was constructed from an old discarded central airconditioning screen. I fastened it to rods with bread wrappers.  The post came from my neighbor who did want them anymore.

5. In keeping with my theme of spending less I have an ongoing series called Buy it or Build it. I am a firm believer or recycling, upscaling, refurbishing, and upcycling.

As I said earlier I garden year-round, I also compost 365 days a year.

6. Save money while helping to save the planet.

7. Let it Rain
I have two barrels and a few small containers that give me the capacity to store 115 gallons of water. The amount of money you could save on watering your plants may surprise you.

This has been an overview of how I garden. I will go into more detail about how I garden in the future as well as post updates on my fall and winter gardens. In the meantime, you can watch and subscribe to my videos on Youtube.
